POND ISLAND--St. Maarten Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin heads to New York today, Wednesday, to represent the Dutch Kingdom at the United Nations Security Council Meeting that will address the peacekeeping mission to the Caribbean island of Haiti.
Romeo-Marlin told the press she will make full use of the opportunity at this top level international organisation to “underscore and draw parallels of best practices thus far in our reconstruction considering that it has been one year since the passing of Hurricane Irma.”
The kingdom has secured a non-permanent seat on the Security Council that is shared with Italy. The kingdom is wrapping up its position as a non-permanent member on the Security Council. One of the agreements made when the seat was won by the Netherlands was that the prime ministers of Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten will be given an opportunity to address the Security Council. The Prime Ministers of Aruba and Curacao have addressed the Security Council on separate occasions. It is now St. Maarten’s turn.
The Security Council is one of six principal UN organs. It is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security and is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions to member states.
