MARIGOT--Carnival has begun on the Northern side of the island with the opening of Paradise Village on Thursday night.
It was a low turnout for the first night, but that did not stop the star entertainment line-up from performing their hearts out to those who were there to support the event.
In her opening remarks, Carnival Committee Vice-President Claudine Mingau invited the public to come out and support all shows, as the volunteers do their best to bring high calibre shows for the public’s enjoyment.
Territorial Councillor in charge of Culture Rollande Questel said, “The Carnival Committee and the organisers have put a lot of energy into planning and putting together an incredible line-up of shows and entertainment for this year’s Carnival. I wish to acknowledge their dedication and their hard work. I want to remind you to be safe and to drink alcohol responsibly, and come to all shows this week. Support the parades and revellers have fun most of all.”
The idea behind a free concert is new for the committee, which is trying to brand the Village. The event is also hosted to encourage people to attend shows in the Village to get acquainted with the venue. The Carnival Committee has been working very hard to put the Village together while it waits for a permanent one, according to the committee.
One of the shows the committee is excited to launch is Battle of the Bands II, which leads straight into J’ouvert Morning. A Tribute to Bob Marley concert and a Zouk ’n More concert are scheduled. These events also will be good exposure for performing entertainers such as Soca Rumble 2016 finalist Ebony Empress; Nuff Respect Band, warming up for Battle of the Bands; and Nu Style Band, which will be on the road for J’ouvert and for the Grand Parade.
Nine troupes are registered for Sunday’s Grand Parade, which is scheduled to start at 12:00pm sharp. Youth Waves Band also will be making a comeback on the streets for the parade.
