No quorum stalls appointment of new Audit Chamber head

PHILIPSBURG--It may be the end of the annual summer recess of Parliament, but members appear not to all be back on the job. Only four Members of Parliament signed in this morning for what was to be the first sitting of the legislature since early July.

The plenary session of Parliament was convened by Parliament Chairwoman Sarah Wescot-Williams to handling the appointment of a new head of the General Audit Chamber. This decision is now stalled until a new sitting can be convened and hopefully held with a quorum.

Today’s meeting was set to start at 9:30am. At 10:00am, the half-an-hour mark by which the meeting should have started, only say four MPs in present – Wescot-Williams, Dr. Luc Mercelina and Jules James of the United Democrats and Claude Peterson (St. Maarten Christian Party). Notices of absence were received only from MPs Chanel Brownbill and Sidharth Bijlani of the United Democrats and Silveria Jacobs and Egbert Doran of the National Alliance.
