The St. Maarten Employers Union (SEU) had an introductory meeting with Members of Parliament on Wednesday. The group, with some 50 members to date, was established last year to fill a niche in employers’ representation. SEU President Virgilio Brooks said businesses “don’t feel totally represented” by existing employers organizations such as St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry or the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) due to their large amount of members.
The group will, however, work with existing organizations and provide training for members. Activities are funded by membership dues. MPs attending the Central Committee meeting discussed the objectives of the group and urged representatives to pay attention to the rights of employees.
