2,600 bottles collected by Native Nation last weekend during their latest Farmers Market and Recycling drive.
CUL DE SAC--More than 2,600 recyclable bottles were collected during the latest Farmers Market and Recycling Drive organised by Native Nation St. Maarten on August 29, marking the initiative’s largest bottle collection to date.
The organisation said the turnout reflects growing participation in recycling and efforts to reduce waste in the community. The recycling drive was established to raise environmental awareness while providing residents with an opportunity to bring recyclable bottles to a collection point and receive a small financial return based on the number of bottles collected.
Native Nation St. Maarten organises the initiative together with the St. Maarten Farmers Cooperative (SMFC) and supporting partners. As participation continues to grow, organisers have introduced guidelines intended to keep the collection process organised and manageable. Residents bringing bottles to the collection point are being asked to ensure that the bottles are clean. According to organisers, this allows volunteers to process the collections more efficiently and helps maintain sanitation standards.
Participants must also remain at the collection area and assist SMFC volunteers in counting their bottles. Once the final count has been confirmed, the corresponding cash payout is provided. Organisers said the procedure is intended to ensure that participants receive the correct amount while maintaining transparency during the collection process. Temporary limits on the number of bottles accepted may also be introduced if the volume of recyclables becomes too large to safely and efficiently handle during a single event.
Native Nation St. Maarten said any such limits would be aimed at protecting participants, volunteers and other members of the public attending the Farmers Market. The organisation thanked residents for their continued participation and said the collection of more than 2,600 bottles demonstrates what can be achieved through community involvement in recycling.
The Farmers Market and Recycling Drive is held every other Saturday at the St. Peters Community Center. Upcoming dates and activities are announced through the NNC SXM Facebook page. Native Nation St. Maarten said it plans to continue working with residents and community partners to promote recycling and encourage greater environmental responsibility on the island.
