Motorist arrested for alcohol consumption, reckless driving

MARIGOT--A man was arrested on Saturday afternoon for driving under the influence of alcohol and for driving in a manner that presented a real danger to other road users.

Lt. Arnaud Gérard confirmed the incident did occur at about 5:00pm. The Gendarmerie received a report of a vehicle, a Hyundai Getz with Dutch-side plates being driven at high speed through La Savane in the direction of Grand Case and Orient Bay.

A Gendarmerie patrol immediately gave chase, pursuing the vehicle, which refused to stop, all the way through French Quarter, until the car crashed just over the border at Belle Plaine. The driver, thought to be from the Dominican Republic, was uninjured but arrested on the spot.

The Dutch-side police were also alerted to the incident as it happened just over the border. The respective prosecutors agreed for the driver to be taken into custody on the French side.
