Mother of 7 passes away as a result of gunshot wounds

CAY HILL--Natashia Schmidt succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries at the Emergency Room of the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) early Tuesday morning and was pronounced dead at 12:50am.

Schmidt (37) was found badly wounded to the head by investigators late on Monday evening after an incident in Dutch Quarter involving her sister and boyfriend, who had been in a heated argument.

Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said the scene of the crime was cordoned off for the Forensic Department officers to collect evidence and detectives to speak to potential witnesses.

The suspect in this case turned himself in to the police station in Philipsburg after 10:00pm and handed in the weapon used in the shooting, which was immediately confiscated.  Schmidt leaves behind seven children.
