CAY BAY--Miss Lalie Centre for youngsters who have come into contact with the wrong side of the law is set to reopen its doors late this month. Final repairs to the centre in Cay Bay are ongoing, as is the recruitment of staff.
Justice Minister Cornelius de Weever said on Wednesday the aim had been to have the centre reopened already, but some slight delays in particular with the delivery of the special security doors hindered this timeline. The doors are now on island. Adjustments are being made to ensure their proper installation.
The special toilet-basin combos have been delivered and are being installed with the coordination of the arrival of a water pump necessary to guarantee the correct “bars” needed for the right pressure and suction.
Discussions are ongoing with the Dr. J Foundation to provide additional services to the youth who will be housed in the correction centre.
The centre suffered damage from Hurricane Irma in September 2017.
The interiors of the cells at the Pointe Blanche prison are being painted by the inmates and coordinated aisle by aisle. When this is completed, epoxy can be applied to the walls.
The bunk beds at the detention centre will also be prepared and painted “just like we improved the Philipsburg police cells/holding cells,” said De Weever.
The washing machines have been delivered to Pointe Blanche and are being installed while the electrical and drainage adjustments are being made.
