ANGUILLA--Minister of Social Development Evans McNiel Rogers opened Women’s Week with an address on Radio Anguilla praising women for their achievements over the years. He noted the theme “Pressing for Progress: Women in Enterprising Endeavours.” He said that International Women’s Day, also known as the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace, was created to acknowledge the social, political, economic and cultural struggles that women are facing globally.
Rogers said it is important to recognise the numerous contributions women are making locally in building Anguilla. “Each honouree is making a positive impact on community development, supporting people with special needs, creating vibrant businesses, caring for our elderly and using art as a tool for youth empowerment,” he said.
He particularly thanked Ronya Foy Connor, Director of Gender Affairs in Anguilla, for being committed to the well-being of every individual and for strengthening our awareness of how gender affects our lives. He also highlighted the female ancestors who sacrificed during the building of the nation and who were activists in ensuring the best for Anguilla.
While commending women he called upon the support of men and the need for all to work together to ensure the stability of the nation. He said that Gender Affairs includes men, women, boys and girls who need to build each other up with love and respect.
“I wish you a Happy Women’s Week 2018 and International Women’s Day. Let us all continue to ‘Press for Progress,’” he concluded.
