Messy situation

Huge piles of garbage and overflowing bins are a constant eye sore around the country. This huge pile with swarms of flies was recently marring the entrance to Fort Willem, a short distance away from Prins Bernhard Bridge.

Garbage pickup around the country has been steadily deteriorating since the districts were chopped up by government and awarded to smaller contractors, many of whom do not have the right equipment or manpower to carry out garbage collections effectively. Residents are increasingly fed up with the sloppy pickup. Many have taken to social and traditional media to voice their frustrations. (Rajesh Chintaman photo)
