'Mechanical failure' cause of country-wide blackout

CAY BAY--Utilities company GEBE says a mechanical failure at its power plant was the cause of the lengthy blackout that gripped the country on Wednesday.

In a brief statement GEBE said technicians at the power plant had been working since 3:50am to rectify the country-wide outage.

"Technicians were able to get one engine online. However, while awaiting the buildup of pressure for other engines to be energized, the first engine failed, therefore the process had to be restarted," GEBE said. "Technicians are working diligently to ensure power is restored to the population as soon as possible."

By the time the statement was issued, power was already restored to at least two areas.

GEBE apologised for the inconvenience caused by the outage.
