MARIGOT--Many friends and working colleagues gathered at the French-side sea rescue headquarters SNSM on Thursday to pay their respects to the memory of the late René-Jean Duret, who was SNSM’s former President, just one of several hats that he wore in the community.

The informal event was organised by SNSM in collaboration with Rotary Club Ile du Nord, the service club with whom he held several responsible positions over the years. The large number of persons who turned out at the small venue reflected the high esteem in which he was regarded by colleagues. Following welcome remarks from SNSM’s current President Arnaud Bourdier with René-Jean’s widow Geneviève by his side, the floor was open for anyone to share their memories of him.

Those who spoke included Rotary, Lions, and Oualichi Club representatives who acknowledged René-Jean’s support to them, and Clara Brander of the Ensolus Think Tank where René-Jean was Vice President, and who made valuable contributions on the discussion of alternative energy solutions for St. Martin. “His intelligence and curiosity that he brought to the table enriched our working relationship,” said Brander.

It was also fitting that Second Vice President of the Collectivité Bernadette Davis should say a few words since René-Jean was a former Territorial Councillor in the Collectivité under the presidency of the late Aline Hanson. Remarks also came from a representative of the cultural and sports association ACS ZEPIN of which René-Jean was a member. Préfecture Secretary General Fabien Sésé, Michaël Wery from Direction de La Mer, and Marine Trades Association Métimer President Béatrice Wojcik, were also present for the tribute.

A condolences book was available for anyone to sign while a loop of family photos through the various stages of his life were shown on a large screen. The tribute closed with snacks and drinks.
