Man murdered in Simpson Bay

SIMPSON BAY--A man said to be of Hispanic descent and known by the name “Memo” was shot and killed in the vicinity of Simpson Bay Real Estate and Robbie’s Lottery at the La Palapa Center in Simpson Bay mid-morning on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson confirmed that a man had been killed on Sunday. Police received the call around 9:30am.

Henson said police are still busy trying to determine the circumstances of this latest killing and to ascertain why it happened. He said there were many “rumours” circulating about the incident and authorities needed to “backtrack” to determine fact from fiction.

Henson said while the identity of the victim is known to authorities, it will not be released at this stage as the family members first have to be notified. However, he said that the man is of Hispanic descent and is a resident of the island. The Daily Herald understands that the man resides on A.Th. IIlidge Road, on which a house search was conducted by authorities not long after the shooting as part of the investigations. This newspaper understands that someone in a small white vehicle drove up to the victim and shot him execution style as he had been walking alongside La Palapa Center apparently towards the Robbie’s Lottery booth in the location. Authorities were seen searching a grey Hyundai Elantra on the scene, which is said to belong to the victim. “There are a lot of missing pieces. We don’t know what happened or why it happened. It’s still so very sketchy,” Henson said.

The escalating crime situation and spate of recent murders have residents on edge and very concerned. Just two Fridays ago on October 9, a 28-year-old Curaçaolenean man was shot and killed after an apparent shootout at Teke Teke Bar on Welgelegen Road. The perpetrator is still on the loose.
