Man jailed for immorality, home invasion in Saba

SABA--A 35-year-old man from the Dominican Republic was sentenced on Wednesday, September 9, to three years of unconditional imprisonment for immorality and home invasion.

The penalty imposed was equal to the prosecutor’s demand, the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Friday. The four proven offences took place in Saba between 2014 and 2020. Each time it involved sneaking into a house by removing shutters or screens from the windows. The suspect subsequently entered the bedrooms of women.

In two cases – concerning a 72-year-old woman and a young student – it did not go further than that the man sat on the women’s beds. In the other two cases the suspect lasciviously touched the body of an eight-year-old girl who was sleeping. He also inappropriately touched his sister-in-law. The defendant committed these crimes while he was under the influence of drugs and alcoholic beverages.

The Court of First Instance in Bonaire has indicated that a three-year prison sentence was justifiable. The seriousness of the facts has had a tremendous impact in Saba, due to the small scale of the island, the Court stated.

After the suspect has served his prison sentence in Bonaire, a procedure will be started for his repatriation to the Dominican Republic, the Prosecutor’s Office stated.
