CAY HILL--In preparation for the new academic year, which will begin on Monday, August 19, faculty and staff of Learning Unlimited (LU) Preparatory School took a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) refresher course to refine CPR skills.

Although a majority of staff have already undertaken CPR training, LU management considered it prudent to have a refresher course on these life-saving skills.

The focus of the training was mainly on CPR – a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths.

Participants started off with scene assessment and the use of barriers. They were trained to act as emergency responders and to avoid taking risks that could harm themselves. The group practised CPR as a single emergency responder and in teams of two. Through the use of mannequins complete with CPR monitoring, they also learned the cycle of care and how to spot signs of cardiac arrest.

They discussed how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), a portable electronic device that attempts to bring an erratically beating heart back to a normal heart rhythm through the application of electricity to the chest. This process is also known as defibrillation.

On request, staff also discussed airway obstruction. This can be another life-threatening emergency with which many persons often do not know how to deal. A demonstration was given on how to help someone who suffers a complete airway blockage.

With the completion of this training, LU management says the school is ready for the start of the new academic year and for medical emergencies.
