Chief of Police Carl John and the KPSM officers who completed their specialised Alzheimer’s training with the White and Yellow Cross.
PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten Police Force KPSM officers recently received specialised training on assisting persons living with Alzheimer’s disease as part of a partnership with the White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation (WYCCF).
Professional nurses from WYCCF provided officers with practical guidance on how to approach and respond to persons living with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as how to refer them for appropriate assistance.
The training also focused on understanding the challenges faced by persons living with the disease and responding safely, respectfully and effectively when assistance is needed.
Chief of Police Carl John thanked WYCCF for partnering with KPSM and providing the training. He said the knowledge gained would better prepare officers to assist persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families when support is required. The training was provided by nurses Micheline Hunte, Minerva Maccow and Vaitaire Overman, among others.
In a separate development, Defence Caribbean, better known as the Dutch military, will support KPSM in the coming period at the request of St. Maarten authorities.
According to KPSM, Defence will assist the police in maintaining safety and public order on the island. Supporting civilian authorities is one of Defence’s three main tasks in the Caribbean.
KPSM said the cooperation between Defence and the police reflects a shared goal of strengthening security and stability on St. Maarten. The police urged the public to cooperate with officers during the operations to allow controls to be conducted safely, efficiently and respectfully.
