PHILIPSBURG--The ceremony to honour students who performed exceedingly well at this year’s Foundation-Based Education (FBE) Exit Examinations has been postponed from Tuesday, August 28, to Tuesday, September 4.
Education Minister Wycliffe Smith’s cabinet chief of staff Peter Gittens said in a notice to the media on Monday that the event has been postponed “due to circumstances beyond our control.”
Since 2012, government has been honouring sixth-graders who perform well at the exams, which determines placement in secondary school.
Smith had said recently that the Ministry of Education will continue to recognise students for exemplary performance at the exams. The ministry usually selects the five students who score the highest. This year, the ministry will honour seven students with the highest overall scores as there was a tie between two students.
The top student in each subject area (math, English, Dutch and general knowledge), will also be honoured. A total of 509 sixth-graders sat the exam earlier this year. The exam tests students on their level of understanding and proficiency in English, math, general knowledge and Dutch.
