AIRPORT--A heavy rainfall advisory was issued for St. Maarten as of Sunday night and will remain effect until 6:00pm today, Monday, due to a passing tropical wave.
The Meteorological Department said instability and copious amounts of moisture associated with a passing tropical wave will cause cloudiness and showers across the region through today.
Some of these showers may be heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, which may cause flooding in low-lying areas as well as rock falls/landslides along hillsides. The Met Office advises residents and users of areas prone to flooding and landslides to be vigilant and/or avoid these areas whenever possible.
Conditions are expected to continue to be generally cloudy and breezy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Surface winds are forecast to be East-Northeast to Southeast with a moderate to fresh breeze of 13-20 miles per hour and higher gusts.
Varying concentrations of Saharan dust will continue to produce hazy conditions. Persons with allergies and/or respiratory illnesses should take the necessary precautions.
Seas are expected to remain moderate with wave heights up to seven feet through the next few days. Small-craft-operators and sea-bathers should exercise caution.
