Government of Sint Maarten & UNDP sign 2.6 million dollar project document

PHILIPSBURG – The Government of Sint Maarten and UNDP signed a project document outlining the support of UNDP towards the early recovery process in Sint Maarten. The project entails house repairs, clean-ups and repairs of community structures.

The interventions are to be implemented in close cooperation with different government agencies through an employment generation approach, utilizing labour from the areas where house repairs and other works are being done. The total value of these projects is 2.6 million US dollars. UNDP will utilize national contractors in the implementation of these projects, supplemented with labour from the intervention areas.

The project was one of the discussion items in a meeting on Wednesday, January 24^th between Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin and UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Richard Blewitt. “The signing of this project document marks yet another step on our journey to a full and sustainable recovery. The goal of this Government is to speed up the recovery process and bring about the necessary relief to the community,” said Prime Minister Romeo-Marlin.

The signing ceremony was conducted by Mr. Richard Blewitt and Secretary General Hensley Plantijn on behalf of the Ministry of General Affairs.

This is one of the early recovery projects financed from the Dutch Recovery Fund for St Maarten, under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. In total €7 million has been made available during the early recovery phase for projects that will have a direct impact on the population of St Maarten.
