Giterson convicted for drunk driving

PHILIPSBURG--The Court of First Instance in accordance with the request of the Prosecutor ruled on Wednesday that Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Miklos Giterson must pay fines for violating Article 5 and 6 of the Road Traffic Regulation.

Giterson was involved in a car accident on L.B. Scott Road at approximately 5:45am September 6, 2018.

The judge ruled in favour of Giterson’s prosecution for drunk driving. A decision on the amount of the fines will be communicated in the near future.

Article 5 concerns the offence of dangerous driving and sets a potential maximum fine of NAf. 300. Article 6 concerns the offence of driving under the influence and sets a potential fine of NAf. 1,500 and a conditional six-month driving prohibition.

“According to reports, MR-6 rear-ended the bus while travelling in the same direction,” police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson had stated in a press release in September. “There were five passengers in the bus at the time of the accident. Passengers who were injured in the collision were transported to St. Maarten Medical Center.”

According to information made available by the hospital, all had been released after examination and medical treatment.

Giterson was present at the Courthouse on Wednesday and did not speak during the hearing. There was no word whether he plans to appeal his conviction.
