Garbage to be handled by waste management plant

EJL Services BV workers collect garbage on Statia.

ST. EUSTATIUS--Garbage service on St. Eustatius is now being handled by EJL Services BV, the company recently awarded the contract by government to manage the recycling plant, collect garbage and to the garbage collection fee for six months.

After six months, the management and the collection fee will be evaluated by government.

Government called on all residents to sign up with EJL Services BV for their garbage collection. Garbage collection fees for houses (depending on size) are US $132 or $216 per year. Fees for businesses are $480, $960 or $1,440 per year. The appropriate fees will be applied at sign up.

If anyone is unable to comply with the fees due to financial constraints they are encouraged to contact the Public Health Department on Cottageweg, where an evaluation will be done to determine if they are eligible for a subsidy.

Residents are reminded by the Public Awareness Communication Team to divide the recyclables (good garbage) into the orange bins and non-recyclables into the grey bins All Statia residents are also called on to contribute to making the recycling process a success.

As of April 9, the Public Works department Drob no longer provides garbage collection services. Residents, as of that date, are no longer allowed to transport their garbage to the landfill as the recycling plant is fully operational.
