MARIGOT--The former L’Oiseau Rare restaurant in Marigot was completely gutted by fire which started on the premises late Thursday morning.
The Creole-type wooden house located at the foot of Rue de La République and opposite the Patisserie L’Express Marigot (formerly La Vie en Rose) has been closed since before Hurricane Irma and seemingly abandoned.
Lieutenant Trival-Fraulech from the Fire Department said two trucks responded to the emergency call at just after midday. No persons were inside the building and no injuries reported. However, firemen ordered an evacuation of persons in the immediate vicinity of the restaurant. The fire was extinguished in about an hour.
Capitaine Arnaud Gerard from the Gendarmerie indicated the cause of the fire has not yet been established. Forensic experts will be sifting through the charred remains to determine whether the cause was arson or accidental. Results will not be known for a couple of days yet.
