PHILIPSBURG--An estimated 900 persons, including representatives of 26 companies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), businesses and schools, participated in the seventh annual Pink Parade on Friday.
The Ebony Steel Orchestra and Boys Brigade were amongst the many in the procession. Many participating companies and organisations walked behind banners of their respective groups to show their support. The large procession of persons walked from University of St. Martin (USM) to Walter Nisbeth Road (the Pondfill road), to Front Street and back to USM, where an official opening ceremony was held to kick off the month-long activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Elektralyets Foundation President Mercedes “Electra” van der Waals-Wyatt, Positive Foundation President Shelly Alphonso, President of Parliament/Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Wescot-Williams and breast cancer survivor Marcellina Loblack addressed participants at the opening ceremony.
Van der Waals-Wyatt said coordinators were happy with the new businesses that had come out and supported the parade, and thanked everyone who had come out to show their support and help spread awareness.
This month’s awareness activities are being held under the theme: “Feel it, find it, fight it” and get checked.
Van der Waals-Wyatt said she was happy that the message was “getting out there.” She welcomed the new partners on board and said awareness was a community effort and “we couldn’t do it without everyone.”
