Dump fire spreading

This aerial image of the smouldering landfill gives a perspective of how widespread the fire billowing smoke since mid-week is. The comparison between the equipment and the dunes of sand battling the fire and the scope of the blaze is also seen in the drone-captured image.

Smoke from the landfill has been affecting residents living around it for years now and despite huge public outcry no firm solution has yet been implemented by any Government. This leaves the dump, way past its lifespan, as a brooding manmade volcano in the middle of the country that is a health risk to residents and an unwelcome sight for visitors from the time cruise ships pull into port. Over the weekend, the fire also spread across the road to the new dump site with Hurricane Irma debris on Pond Island. (Photo courtesy John Caputo)
