CUT donates $27,000 relief for local teachers

PHILIPSBURG--The Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) has donated almost US $27,000 in hurricane relief funds for teachers in St. Maarten who were affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

  Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) President Claire Elshot said at a press conference on Wednesday that the funds had already been transferred into the union’s accounts. The funds will be split equally amongst all WITU members and the union will be arranging a time when they can visit the office to collect the financial aid.

  Elshot said that although not all teaches had lost their roofs during Hurricane Irma, all of them are in St. Maarten, which was affected by the hurricane.

  She said the funds had been were provided by the CUT and channelled to WITU via Educational International (EI).

  The union also will be seeking a status update on how its members are doing following the storm and teachers will be asked to fill in questionnaires for an update on their status. The information will give the union a general idea on how its members are faring and can be used as a basis for the union to request additional aid for teachers.
