Customs finds container with 1,000 kilos marijuana

PHILIPSBURG--Customs officers detected  a container with almost 1,000 kilos of marijuana at the Harbour on Sunday, in what is said to be the third-largest bust at the facility in recent years.

The drugs were found hidden away in large black plastic bags in a container that had been offloaded from the vessel MV Islandia, which arrived at the island from Jamaica on Saturday evening.

No one had been arrested in connection with the bust up to late Sunday, as investigation into the matter was moving ahead.

Customs officers began their operation at the Harbour around 5:00am Sunday. Six to seven officers had been searching the containers. Around 11:00am officers noticed some large black bags in one of the containers and further investigation found that they contained marijuana. Up to 16 of the large bags of marijuana were confiscated weighing close to 1,000 kilos.

Customs head Anthony Doran said authorities were aware of the details of whom the container was destined for. He said further information could not be released at this stage as the investigation was still ongoing.

Customs is expected to release details and pictures on the bust today, Monday.
