ST. EUSTATIUS--The Crater Trail that takes residents and visitors into the heart of The Quill volcano has officially reopened.

A landslide had resulted in the closure of the trail about a year and a half ago and St. Eustatius National Park Foundation STENAPA had been working for the last few months on restoring the original trail. The restoration will give hikers and avid nature lovers another route into the crater. New steps and ropes now provide persons with assistance along the steepest parts of the trail.

The STENAPA team visited the crater on Friday, March 11, for “Family Friday” and cleared hanging debris, trimmed re-bars, changed a few ropes, and cleared overgrowth from the path.

Persons using the trail are advised that the trail is considered difficult due to slippery rocks when it has rained recently. Persons are urged to take precautions, but also to enjoy their hike.

This project was funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations BZK.
