ST. EUSTATIUS--A wide array of colours were on display by the four troupes that participated in St. Eustatius Carnival’s 2017 Grand Parade on Saturday and on Sunday’s Second Day Parade.
Even though the temperatures on the island were high this weekend’s parades were well attended.
Four troupes took part in the parades: Carnival Survivors headed by Joan Windefelde; Multi-Mix troupe led by Sjudi Redan; Caribbean Tribe led by Julissa Woodley and Statia Treasurers headed by Teena Lopes.
Carnival Survivors, one of the longest-running troupes, were split into two sections during the parades – one for children and one for adults.
The Survivors paid tribute to one of their members, Sybil Brown, who passed away suddenly.
As a treat to seniors the Community Home Care had set up a tent in front of the office of St. Eustatius Utility Company Stuco along the parade route so that the elderly admirers of Carnival could sit and enjoy the Parade.
The troupes were in a merry and partying mode throughout the parade, despite the mix-up in start time and location.
The First Day Parade was due to start Saturday at 2:00pm, at Christine and William Flanders Community Centre, but around 3:00pm revellers were informed that the parade would start at the Mall. The Parade eventually started off around 4:00pm.
The Jamm Boyz and Turbulannz Band provided music for the participating troupes as well as a deejay.
During Saturday’s Parade a member of Caribbean Tribe fell ill. An ambulance came to the Carnival Village to look after the woman.
Many spectators were impressed with the detail and professionalism of all the troupe costumes’ designs.
Today, Monday, Statia Carnival 2017 will close off with the Last Lap Jump-Up followed by the burning of King Momo.
