PHILIPSBURG--Scores of residents flocked to stores around the island on Friday, to cash in on discounts being offered on a range of items for Black Friday.
Some establishments opened as early as 6:00am for shoppers to make their purchases before heading to work, while some stayed opened extra late to accommodate shoppers who could not make it earlier in the day. At some places such as at Cost u Less, TelEm and some stores in Philipsburg, shoppers started to queue up before daylight to be first in lines.
Shoppers could be seen picking up sale items and rushing through isles to grab what they wanted. Some establishments had extra workers on hand to accommodate the extra customers. Some shoppers walked around with newspaper clippings with Black Friday ads as they moved from store to store.
One enthusiastic shopper at Boolchands told The Daily Herald that he was happy with the Black Friday sales as he has already purchased his gift items for his entire family. Many stores in the Philipsburg shopping hub had signs and posters advertising their respective sales and enticing shoppers to pay them a visit. Persons were seen walking out of stores with full bags and smiles on their faces.
The Black Friday rush was accompanied by traffic congestions around the island. Persons trying to get into Philipsburg during the course of the day were greeted with “snail’s pace” traffic; other areas also had traffic jams.
