Beach business

Dutch Members of Parliament visited St. Eustatius last Friday. At Zeelandia Beach, St. Eustatius National Parks STENAPA Marine Park Manager Jessica Berkel and Director Clarisse Buma informed the politicians about the ongoing problems with sand mining and persons driving on the beach.

Zeelandia Beach is the most important nesting site on the island. It is prohibited, Buma said, to take sand or drive on this beach because it can destroy nests. Sea turtles are in the top 10 of most endangered animals worldwide. STENAPA is in consultation with the local government about the need for closing the beach to vehicles.
