Battling the sand

The operator of this front-end loader appeared to be like the legendary King Canute of Denmark and England who tried to hold back the tide, but failed.

The high surf on Sunday rushed over the beach and the cement barrier along Beacon Hill Road towards the airport runway. It left in its wake piles of sea sand and water the lone loader was trying to put back out on Maho Beach. Any time there is high surf this road floods and is choked with sand, leaving residents and visitors to navigate through quicksand-like conditions. (John Halley photo)
