ANGUILLA—The hearing of the manslaughter case for Scot Hapgood was adjourned until November 11. However, Hapgood failed to show up on Monday November 11 for the hearing so the Attorney General, Dwight Horsford has started the formal process of extradition, saying that Hapgood has violated his bail conditions. The prosecution is expected to proceed with the preliminary inquiry into the case in his absence.
Gavin Scot Hapgood of Connecticut, was arrested and charged by the Royal Anguilla Police Force for the offence of manslaughter. The charge followed the death on Saturday April 13, of a national of Dominica, 27-year-old Kenny Mitchel, who was resident in Anguilla and worked at one of the island’s hotels in the West End. Hapgood says it was a case of self-defence.
According to the Darien Times Hapgood’s reason for not returning is due to death threats and concerns over a fair trial, and the fear of being sent to prison in Anguilla.
