Christians on St. Eustatius commemorated Ascension Day on Thursday. The day is tied to the Christian belief of the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is one of the ecumenical feasts of Christian churches, ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter, and Pentecost.
Father De Jong, who led the congregation at St. Eustatius Catholic Church said: “In today’s world, we cannot but wonder at Christ's instruction to his eleven remaining disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit descended upon them … after those 40 days, those same disciples would speak in foreign tongues to a world about the life of Jesus, his inspiration and his message. On Statia, He is with us always and his mission is our mission too.”
