All 3 parties surpass minimum signatures, qualify for elections

PHILIPSBURG--The Party for Progress (PFP), United People’s Party (UP) and the People’s Progressive Alliance (PPA) all surpassed the signatures required to contest the January 9, 2020 snap parliamentary elections during the endorsement of lists at the Department of Civil Registry on Friday.

New political group, PFP was the first to qualify with 156 signatures by 11:00am. By the time the process ended at 4:00pm, PFP had the most signatures of the three parties, as 311 persons had endorsed its slate.

UP became the second political group to qualify to contest the snap parliamentary elections when it secured 156 signatures by 1:00pm Friday. By the close of the process UP had 205 signatures.

PPA was the third to qualify, acquiring 138 signatures by 2:00pm and ending the day at 178 signatures.

Since the three political parties do not currently have a seat in Parliament they needed at least 136 persons to endorse their candidate list to quality to contest the elections.

The endorsement/support of the political candidate lists was held at the Department of Civil Registry between 9:00am to 4:00pm Friday. A voter could have supported a list by placing their signature on a candidate list. The same voter was not allowed to sign more than one list.  Only eligible voters could have supported a candidate list. The voter needed to identify themselves with a valid identification card, a valid passport or a valid driver's license.

Political parties that obtained one or more seats in parliament during the last election did not need to have their lists endorsed.
