ST. PETERS--The Preparatory Secondary Vocational Education (PSVE) section of St. Maarten Academy won its debate against Learning Unlimited (LU) Preparatory School at the Rupert I. Maynard Youth Community Center in St. Peters on Saturday evening.
The school’s debaters Abigail Stevens, Aliyah Prince, Jordani Labadie and Tifaunia Joseph (researcher) opposed the moot “GEBE should utilise renewable energy resources for electricity production.” The best speaker award for the PSVE campus went to Prince.
With this win, the students advance to the finals of the annual interscholastic debating competition 2018. The school will debate the proposition of the moot “The minimum wage on St. Maarten promotes poverty” with its sister school St. Maarten Academy-academic campus.
Last week, students won their debate against Charlotte Brookson Academy (CBA) of the Performance Arts, in which Academy PSVE proposed the moot “The government of St. Maarten should implement recycling measures in the country.”
Stevens won the “Best Speaker” title during that round of the debate.
This is the first year the school entered the interscholastic debate competition.
