PHILIPSBURG--Sixty-six employees from Utilities Company GEBE are now more versed in life saving techniques after having successfully completed Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillators (AED) training conducted by the Windward Islands Emergency Medical Services (WIEMS). GEBE said it had partnered with WIEMS in February to offer the training for its staff. “The training represented the next step forward in promoting and enhancing the company’s vision and mission statements while the main objective is to improve safety amongst its staff who will be able to assist the community at large,” GEBE said in a press release on Thursday.
“This training will better enable the staff to assist in the case of emergency situations,” the company’s Managing Board said. “The goal of the training was to help GEBE’s staff and ultimately create positive outcomes for persons who need assistance in emergency situations.” The groups were divided in three and each group attended an intense eight-hour, two days of training.
GEBE is currently finalising other trainings with WIEMS. The next training will be a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) which will teach employees how to deal with mass casualties that can occur in situations such as an explosion, earthquake, hurricane or large scale accidents. “In order for the staff to be able to partake in the MCI training they needed to be CPR certified.”
GEBE’s Managing Board said it encourages staff to participate in these trainings as they are “very essential” for job situations and personal lives as well.
