Worthy task

The signing of a two-year contract by White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation (WYCCF) with Social and Health Insurances SZV (see Tuesday paper) should not go unnoticed. It regards the AVBZ solidarity fund started in 1986, for which both employers and workers pay a premium.

Taking care of the chronically ill or disabled is the main objective and WYCCF has made a huge positive impact in that sense over the years, whether through St. Martin’s Home for the elderly, Sister Basilia Centre catering to disadvantaged youngsters or the District Nursing programme. One can hardly imagine what life for many of these patients and their families would be without these efforts.

New is that this agreement includes an education and training budget to upgrade personnel and the services they provide. It was announced too that next year the nursing home is expanding from 44 to 55 beds and the Sister Basilia day care from 45 to 65 clients, in both cases to reduce ever-longer waiting lists, while the island’s first hospice will open in St. Martin’s Home.

This growth is also indicative of the continued generally positive developments at WYCCF. Indeed, all those involved with this important organisation, whether now or in the past, deserve to be commended for the worthy tasks they perform day after day on behalf of society.
