The FIFA World Cup entered its decisive knock-out phase of 32, with host nations the US, Mexico and Canada all qualifying and the latter even through to the round of 16 already. Curacao’s “Blue Wave” bowed out of the tournament having scored its first goal, earned its first point and broken the record for saves during a match in regular time, apart from becoming the smallest country ever to participate.

Traditional powerhouses such as holders Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Germany, England and Portugal are still in it, but also surprise packages like the Cabo Verde Islands. So-called outsiders or “dark horses” include regional favourite Colombia.

The Netherlands and France continuing in the tournament is certainly a boost for people on respectively the Dutch- and French sides of “The Friendly Island” watching the games. How far each goes remains to be seen, but they will both no doubt have plenty of support.

As a matter-of-fact, if either team loses its fans would do well to back the other, in solidarity with their brothers and sister across the open border. Considering the frequent talk of unity and being one community especially every November 11, this would be a way to show it.
