Today’s story about a young woman who died in the hospital after attending Jouvert Morning on Thursday is sad, to say the least. It also shows the perils of social media, because word quickly spread that her drink apparently had been laced with Ecstasy and she had overdosed.
This newspaper decided to hold off on publishing the information pending some sort of confirmation. It turned out traces of the drug were indeed found in the deceased’s urine, but not enough to kill a person.
Despite a ruptured vein in the brain her death was considered of natural causes. There were also no witnesses indicating she had consumed too much alcohol or that something had been put in her beverage.
Nevertheless, the latter could have happened and perhaps even been a contributing factor. The call of both Prime Minister William Marlin and Justice Minister Rafael Boasman to be conscious of such a very real threat should therefore not go unheeded.
