Top priority

The Fire Department was able to move back into its premises following major maintenance to tackle persistent airflow issues with all potential consequences (see related story). This is not the first time it had to temporarily relocate for similar reasons but will hopefully be the last, at least for now.

The full replacement of blowers and upgrade to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system should reportedly greatly improve the airflow and temperature control, “as well as mitigate any future recurrence of situations” that could affect the employees’ health. The latter indicates that there are never guarantees, but Government Buildings Foundation SOG is confident the immediate problem was resolved.

The employees also received their much-awaited protective suits and, according to Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs (General Affairs), as these fit, another batch can be ordered so they each get two. She said most complaints of the firefighters and ambulance personnel have now been addressed.

Still, the question remains why it had to take so long. After all, US $110.2 million of the Dutch-sponsored Trust Fund is for the Emergency Recovery Project, to which $ 19.5 million will be added to repair vital infrastructure such as reconstruction of the complex housing the fire station and ambulance post.

So, when reading these amounts and hearing about firefighters – for example – lacking proper boots, one can’t help but wonder how that is even possible. While extensive criteria for these means managed by the World Bank must be met, adequate gear and equipment are obviously a bare necessity in this case.

Not to sound unthankful, but recent news that members of the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM were donated bulletproof vests is also a bit puzzling. The initiative by two US military veterans including a two-day seminar and demonstration on their use is well-appreciated, mind you.

However, something that essential for the safety of law enforcement personnel ought to be top priority and not depend on the generosity of others.
