The final exam results at Milton Peters College (MPC) aren’t exactly stellar (see related story). However, one should keep in mind that it regards only a preliminary outcome.
The TKL stream did worst with 37 per cent, while 32 per cent of the 89 students involved failed. Of course, this means the remaining 31 per cent can do re-sit exams, which could drive the passing rate up to hopefully at least near the same 59 per cent as last year.
Of the 15 VWO candidates 60 per cent passed and 13 per cent failed, which means 27 per cent will get a second chance. For 44 HAVO candidates the same figures were respectively 59 per cent, 9 per cent and 32 per cent.
Everything is relative and these two groups actually did much better than last year, according to the secondary education school’s management. Their rates are expected to ultimately reach 75 to 80 per cent.
In the PLK/PBL department 52 per cent of the 77 examinees passed and 10 per cent failed, leaving some 37 per cent to do re-sit exams. The end result there is thus also likely to be considerably higher than the 57 per cent of last year.
It’s important to note that in all the cases mentioned, having to do re-sit exams was sometimes due to illness.
The additional requirements of not being allowed more than one insufficient grade and needing a 5.5 out of 10 average for the central exams were said to make the current results satisfactory. The new rules were experienced as a challenge, but ultimately the goal is to produce quality graduates.
Sundial School did very well with 45 of 59 candidates or 83 per cent overall passing outright. The PKL department boasted a rate of 91.2 per cent and the PBL department one of 71.4 per cent, while respectively four and nine students still have another opportunity.
All things considered, the provisional results on the whole are certainly not horrible, but there’s always room for improvement.
