Word of Port of St. Maarten CEO Mark Mingo’s detention on Wednesday spread like wildfire. The arrest at Princess Juliana International Airport SXM was made in connection with the “Emerald” case involving security company owner O.A.
That this news led to a bit of unrest is understandable. After all, it regards the boss of one of the island’s most important entities in terms of its tourism economy.
People were quick to point out that he remains innocent until proven guilty, which is of course absolutely correct. Nevertheless, the whole investigation started when a financial report from the Harbour Group showed the amount paid for security had gone up considerably after the firm providing it changed hands.
Several angles have been looked into since, including election campaign contributions reportedly made to a current Member of Parliament. Apparently there was now enough reason to pick Mingo up.
Some questioned the publishing of his full name while the practice is to use only suspects’ initials until they are convicted by a court of law. However, exceptions to this unwritten rule are made internationally for so-called “public figures” holding positions of great authority and responsibility.
As community leaders, more may generally be expected of them in setting an example for others.
