Most realistic

What was already becoming increasingly obvious is now a reality. Despite much discussion on a new Parliament House, the lease contract for the current facility ends in August and there was little choice but to seek an extension (see Tuesday paper).

The good news is that a reduction in the current monthly payments of US $96,000 has been negotiated. That is also logical, because more than a third of that amount was to cover considerable investments made by the owner to make the complex suitable for the legislature already seven years ago.

The final figure is not yet known, as some additional adjustments were requested that will impact the final price. However, it should be a lot closer to the basic rent of $60,000.

While continued use of the accommodations apparently has been secured for now, a more permanent home is still to be sought. Many proposals were made, including for an entirely new, grand and stately structure on Pond Island, but especially considering Government’s financial situation that might not be the best alternative in terms of affordability.

It’s been said before: Refurbishing the old Administration Building where the Island Council used to meet is perhaps not a very glamorous option, but probably the most realistic one. The central location and available parking in any case seem like a plus.
