More than one

More than one

The installation of an Advisory Board (see Wednesday’s newspaper) for the St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry (COCI) is an intriguing development. While such a body has no known authority or legal role in the organisation, it can certainly serve as a useful sounding board by providing strategic guidance.

Questions may be asked about the selection criteria applied, but most will agree that the persons involved are seasoned professionals who have already proven their value to society. The current COCI Board of Directors headed by Tamara Leonard is reportedly “committed to reinforcing strong leadership, institutional continuity and inclusive participation as it continues to support economic development and represent the interests of the business community.”

Sure, some members might argue they did not vote for any advisory board and that the official one they elected must carry its own responsibility. However, nobody said they wouldn’t and it’s hard to see how structural advice – as long as non-binding – from people with the necessary relevant experience and capabilities is such a bad thing.

By the same token, recently announced community consultations starting on Thursday in Dutch Quarter can provide the chamber with grass-roots feedback. Attendees, particularly existing and potential entrepreneurs, for their part are to benefit from useful related information.

After all, two know more than one.
