More than one

Winair’s hosting (see related story) of the inaugural Regional Aviation and Border Interconnectivity Conference (RABIC) was timely in several ways. Currently expanding its fleet and routes, facilitating travel between the islands seems like a no-brainer for the local carrier.

It also followed the launch of “4 Islands One Escape” by St. Maarten, St. Martin, St. Kitts, Nevis, Saba and Statia. This new multi-destination initiative is to provide seamless island-hopping with connectivity partner Makana Ferry, as reported in Monday’s newspaper.

“St. Kitts offers vibrant charm and laid-back island elegance; Nevis blends luxury, tranquillity, and authenticity; Saba is known for untouched natural beauty and pristine landscapes; Statia (St. Eustatius) offers rich historical and cultural experiences; and St. Maarten and St. Martin provide entertainment, duty-free shopping, and culinary delights. Together, these islands deliver a story of adventure, authenticity, and connection,” the story read.

All this adds to the hub function of Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA). And while it was recently argued that transit passengers may skew stay-over guest numbers, they also contribute to the economy.

Regional tourism in general has a lot of potential, according to various studies. Now that air arrivals are finally surpassing pre-Hurricane Irma levels, a greater focus should be placed on this close-to-home market.

The Caribbean has what many want in a vacation, regardless where they are from. But in addition to the common sun, sand and sea, the islands offer very diverse experiences that make it worthwhile to visit more than one.
