Explaining to do

News that no public funds are available for St. Maarten’s participation (see related story) in the upcoming CARIFTA Games is disappointing to say the least. After all, it is the Caribbean’s premier track & field meet for youngsters.

The National Athletics Federation, the eight athletes’ parents and a few local businesses are trying to raise an estimated US $17,400 required to send the 12-member delegation to host Grenada. Of that amount, $14,400 is urgently needed to buy the airline tickets.

No reason why government funding fell through was given, considering that this is a regular and long-established sports happening at which the country has frequently been represented. Perhaps the continued lack of an approved 2026 budget and the decision not to amend last year’s version anymore played a role.

Regardless, the alarm bell might have been rung earlier. The event is taking place from April 4 to 6, leaving precious little time to come up with the money.

If you are able to, please help, because competing at the highest level within the region is of great importance for the development of these athletes. Furthermore, St. Maarten’s flag should always fly at such occasions where possible.

In the meantime, the Council of Ministers has some explaining to do over this regrettable matter.
