Can’t hide

Can’t hide

On at least two occasions during the past week, St. Maarten’s Police Force KPSM was able to make outstanding arrests with international help. In last Thursday’s newspaper they reported the extradition of a suspect linked to the fatal shooting on Aron Jacobs Drive in Cay Bay which occurred a year ago.

J.J. had escaped to the French side of the island, but was held later by local Gendarmes. Through collaboration with French judicial authorities, Interpol and the St. Kitts & Nevis Royal Police Force, he can now be brought to justice.

A suspect was also held in connection with a jewellery store robbery (see Monday edition) on September 5, 2025. J.J.B, a 35-year-old man, fled abroad shortly after in an attempt to evade capture.

However, following an investigation and coordination with regional law enforcement agencies they were able to locate him and secure his detention. He will now likely face trial before the court in Philipsburg.

These examples illustrate the growing importance of cross-border cooperation in combatting crime. As mobility increases, having the long arm of justice stretch beyond the country’s frontiers sends a strong message to delinquents and would-be offenders.

You may be able to run, but probably can’t hide forever.
