St. Maarten student admitted to a Division 1 University

PHILIPSBURG--Shemar Deion Bute created history when he became the first St. Maartener to be recruited to a Division 1 school sports programme.

Bute, a graduate of Tallahassee Community College (TCC), will be attending Connecticut Central State University (CCSU) in the Fall of 2017. He currently plays “centre” in basketball, but will be a “forward” at CCSU. Bute is a graduate of St. Maarten Academy where he was awarded Athlete of the Year.

Bute is a second-year participant on Tallahassee Community College men's basketball team. After attending TCC for a year, he earned a spot on the Eagles' 2015-16 roster and promptly averaged 7.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 31 games, good for a spot on the Coaches' All-Panhandle Conference Second-team.

He was also named to the FCSAA All-Tournament Team after helping the Eagles to the tournament championship game. Academically, Bute is an honour student and was named All-Academic by the Panhandle Conference in 2016, according to tcc.edu.

St. Maarten’s Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Silveria Jacobs met with Bute where he discussed his current academic position as well as his professional aspirations.

Jacobs expressed her excitement for Bute and wished him the best in all his future endeavours. She also assured that the Ministry is willing to support Bute “in any way possible.”
