St. Dominic and St. Joseph win school basketball nail-bitters

PHILIPSBURG--St. Dominic Primary School squeezed past Sister Marie Laurence in week five of the Walichi Basketball Association organized Interscholastic Basketball Championship at  L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium Wednesday.


  The game was tight from the beginning.  A'dondre Huggins of St. Dominic and Shequan Illis of Sister Marie Laurence went back and forth scoring for their teams. The first half ended with St. Dominic leading by one point  at 14-13.
  In the second half Kendrick Mohamed scored two 3-pointers to give Sister  Marie Laurence the lead.
  St. Dominic had the ball win 12 seconds left down by one at 20-21.  Huggins put the ball up, missed but got fouled and made the free throw to force the game into overtime.
  The game was settled with a five free throw shootout.  St. Dominic scored three times.  Sister  Marie Laurence made one.
  St. Dominic was led by  Huggins with 15 points and Carl Gomez with seven.  Sister Marie Laurence was led by Illis with 15 points and Kendrick Mohamed with nine. In the second game, the intensity continued with St. Joseph School playing Sister Magda Primary School. Both teams battled hard.  Sister Magda  lead 10-9 at the half.
    St. Joseph jumped out to a four point lead with under a minute to play. Sister Magda battled back to close the lead to one.
  St. Joseph got the ball with 24 seconds left and dribbled out the game to win 19-18.
St. Joseph was led by Alex Godoy with nine points and Kayvaughn Schmidt with six. Sister Magda was led by Aiden Busby with 10 points.
  Games continue for Pool B on this afternoon  starting at 3:30pm.
