Shakeba Pink wins bronze at Carifta

PHILIPSBURG--Shakeba Pink returned to the Friendly Island with a Bronze medal in the 1,500 meter track and field race at the 45th Carifta Games held in Grenada March 24 to 28. The St. Maarten Amateur Athletic Association held three qualifying competitions which resulted in three individuals making the team.

Traveling to Grenada were Jeremy Drijvers, Leshawn Brown and Pink.
“Last year, Shakeba Pink accomplished a great performance for St. Maarten by receiving a Silver Medal, on the 3000 Meters Race,” said coach Les brown. “This year, St. Maarten set out to accomplish equal or greater results.”
Pink competed in the 1,500 meters and the 3000 meters.  She finished fourth in the 3,000.
Drijvers competed in both the 100 and 200 meters.   In the local trials he ran 11.04.  In Grenada he recorded a personal best of 11.03 but did pass the first round at Carifta.
Brown competed in the Octathlon, an eight discipline competition for each performance, the athlete receives points.   Brown’s  times and scores were Day 1: 100m-12.04 sec, 400m- 53 sec, Long jump- 5,60m, Shot put- 11,33m;  Day 2: 110m Hurdles- 14 sec, High jump – 1,63m, Javelin- 57m, 1500m- 5 min
“Overall performance of the athletes was satisfactory, said the coach. “We will be looking forward to taking part in the next Carifta Games 2017, in Curacao.”
“The overall trip to Grenada was very strenuous,” reported Coach Brown.
“We had many obstacles in getting to Grenada and returning to St. Maarten. Due to a very packed Easter Weekend, space was very limited, and had difficulties obtaining seating in and out of Grenada. This resulted in the Athletes missing a few days from school.”
